New Processing Machine, Changes to Sell by Date and Carton - 2008-08-15

Dear Egg Buyer,

The New Processing Machine

In June, we installed a new processing machine at The Country Hen farm. This machine is fully computerized and, overall, a more sophisticated system than the old machine. Installing the new machine was a huge undertaking. We shut down the processing facility in Hubbardston and all of our processing crew went on a Country Hen field trip to Lunenburg, MA to process our eggs there. Meanwhile, we prepared fro the arrival of the new machine here: painted the floor, cut a hole in the roof to make way for a higher candling booth, revamped our electrical system, and redesigned our cooler to match the configuration of the new processor.

Sell By Date Is Now On The Side Of The Carton

Another Improvement! At the time of the processing machine installation, we also invested in a new date coder for the sell by date on the cartons. We are in the process of installing the equipment that applies the code with inkjet technology. The major change is that it will now appear in black on the SIDE OF THE CARTON instead of the top.

Changes to The Carton

A downside to the new processing machine is that it is not able to close the new egg cartons. We have done everything we can to try and resolve this, but have not succeeded. Because of this, we will be returning to the old egg carton design. The label will essentially look the same except there will not be a sell by area anymore because it will now be stamped on the side of the carton. Also, the USDA organic logo will be on the top of the carton, as well as the front.

Thank You
